Audrey has been with us about 5 days now. She is a super sweet girl. She is a little shy at first when meeting new people. Her tail wags and she approaches slowly. But once you begin petting her she melts right into you. If you stop petting her she will use her nose to flip your hand back onto her.
Audrey was in a kill shelter in Alabama and it was found that she was heartworm positive. Her future looked pretty dark until Fluffy Dog Rescue agreed to take her. Fluffy Dog rescue has successfully treated many dogs for heartworm over the years.
Audrey arrived on Tuesday and I took her to the clinic on Wednesday for her heartworm treatment. The clinic is a wonderful small non-profit place. The president is also the receptionist. There is a vet who runs the clinic and he is assisted by visiting vets who volunteer their time and experience. The clinic offers low cost spay, neuter and vaccines for the pets of members of the community. They also offer heartworm treatment to licensed rescues.
When I arrived the receptionist gushed over Audrey. Audrey was so good and shyly approached her for some petting. After petting Audrey for a few minutes the receptionist remarked how Fluffy Dog Rescue always has the best dogs. She meets probably hundreds of dogs each month so this was truly a compliment. I smiled and thanked her. Based on the dogs I have fostered, I would have to agree. Fluffy Dogs are the best.
The vets came out to administer the treatment. They too gushed over her. The treatment consists of two injections given twenty four hours apart into muscles along the back. It's not pleasant but Audrey was a trooper and did not flinch. One of the vets quickly left the room after administering the treatment. When I went back for the second treatment the next day the receptionist told me that the vet was falling for Audrey but couldn't have another dog so thought it best to leave quickly before completely falling in love. The receptionist told me that Audrey was the talk of the clinic that day.She made quite and impression on everyone she met. She's a gorgeous girl who is equally as sweet.
When Audrey was rescued from the kill shelter she spent a few weeks at an Alabama foster home before her ride up to Illinois. The foster in Alabama rescues dogs from all over the state and sees literally thousands of dogs each year. Audrey also made a significant impression on her. While she was glad to see Audrey move onto a new life of health and happiness she was sad to have to say good-bye.
So, Audrey's treatment is done and now she just needs to rest for a few weeks. After that she just needs monthly heart worm preventative (such as Heartgard Plus) just like any dog. That's it. The resting won't be too hard. She seems to be a pretty low key girl. I work from home and during the day she's been content to nap on a blanket next to my desk. In the morning when she wakes up she's happy and will grab a toy and toss it around a bit and roll on the ground scratching her back. She does her potties outside, has breakfast and is fine to nap again. To me she seems like a nice mix of a happy, playful and affectionate girl.
I have three dogs. A senior sheltie mix, Holly, a standard poodle and a miniature poodle. Because my poodles can be a little hyper I chose to keep them away from Audrey while she's resting. I introduced her to my sheltie though and they are doing just fine together. You can see a video below of Holly and Audrey taking treats. Audrey takes treats gently and is very good about waiting her turn. Audrey has also been good about doing all her potties outside. We crate her at night and she sleeps soundly and does not fuss. Also, she rode nicely in the car on our rides to the clinic.

Thanks for reading and thanks for thinking rescue. Thanks especially for your interest in this very sweet soul.
