Welcome Audrey

It's been a couple of months since we've had a foster in our home so we were so excited when Audrey arrived today.  Gosh, she's a gorgeous girl.  She's a beautiful white haired girl with soulful round brown eyes.  I just love her look.  Her size is also fantastic.  She's not too big or too small. She's about 19 inches to the top of her shoulder and about 32 pounds.  She is smaller than I expected from seeing her pictures but a perfect size really.  She's comfortably in the "medium" size category.

She just travelled from an Alabama shelter to her rescue foster home here in Northern Illinois so she's a little unsure of things and a little shy.  But after a few minutes with each of my family members she warmed up nicely.  She really does love people.  Me, my husband, my daughters, she loved us all.  It's not too hard to tell when she likes someone because her tail starts to wag a little and pretty soon her whole back end is moving end to end.  As I am typing this she is sitting at my daughter's feet in the family room.

I took her on a couple of walks today and she walked really nicely on the leash.  She walked in front of me but did not pull.  She takes treats nicely and uses a gentle mouth when she takes them from my hand.  She went into the crate nicely when I threw a treat in there and did not fuss.

She has a little pep in her step.  She grabbed one of the soft dog toys and threw it up in the air.  Also when we walked out in the yard she was happy and had a spring in her step. She's only just arrived but she's done all her potties outside so far.

We believe that Audrey is about 5 yrs old.  That's what the vet tells us.  The vet also tells us that she's heartworm positive.  No problem.  We will have her treated here in Illinois.  Just like Snyder (keep reading this blog for his story), she'll have two treatments which will kill the heart worms and then she'll rest for about 4 weeks.  During that time the heart worms will die and will be absorbed into her system.  She'll be rid of heart worms forever and will just need to stay on a monthly heartworm preventative (like Heartgard Plus) for 24 months.  Easy!

This is the rewarding part of rescue.  The cute and fluffy puppies are easy.  The dogs with a few years behind them and a few "dents, " like Audrey and Snyder,  really are why we do what we do.  It is so wonderful to see these dogs blossom as they become healthy and confident.

Here are a few pictures from today.

Thanks for thinking rescue!

First things first.  Audrey got a bath upon arrival.  She was good in the tub.

Meeting my younger daughter (11).  We were in the basement.

So white she almost blends in with the snow

Very good on our walk today.
