Found some time to add comments. I wasn't in a rush because she's such a great girl!
She is doing wonderfully with my dog, Holly. I have two other dogs, one who plays rough and another who can be cranky so I haven't introduced them because I wanted to keep Hillary calm during the next few weeks but they are separated by a gate in the house and have been just fine. In fact Hillary wants to come over and play with them but she needs to remain low-key so I haven't allowed it. Hillary does want to play with Holly but at 15 years old Holly is not going to reciprocate so I don't have to worry about them getting wound up.
Before she started her treatment I took her on a few walks in the neighborhood and she did great. She was fine with all the normal neighborhood happenings...kids on bikes, people mowing lawns, cars going by, dogs in their yards, etc. In fact as some of the dogs barked at her from inside their electric fences she just ignored them and kept walking with me. She walks nicely, although not in a straight line, she kind of zig-zags from side to side but that's okay, walking on a leash is probably new and she'll get the hang of it. If she does see a squirrel or rabbit though hang on because then she will pull, but that's normal dog stuff.
She loves people and is doing great with everyone in our house. She especially loves my teenage daughters.
She has been doing all her potties outside. In fact, she has rang the bell on the back door a couple time to be let outside. I didn't teach her the bell but she seems to have figured it out on her own.
She is a petite lab. She weighed about 36 pounds when we took her to the vet for her treatment. She is a little thin and should probably be about 40-45 pounds. The vet loved her, loved her look, her size and her temperament.
She does need to keep calm the next few weeks as the medicine dissolves the heart worms in her system. If her heart rate goes up there is a risk of a piece dislodging and causing a clot. We want them to dissolve slowly, not quickly. So, I walk her outside in the yard on a leash so she doesn't run around and then she is crated several hours of the day or lounging in the family room watching TV with the girls. She sleeps quietly in her crate all night.
Stairs seem to be a new thing for her. We showed her how to do them the first couple days she was here but now that's she supposed to keep calm we don't have her doing any. She will probably need a refresher course.
I'll add that she was unsettled the first few days she was here. She whined some and seemed a little unsure about everything. But, fast forward a week and she's doing great. So give her time when she transitions to your home. She is a sweet girl who will need some time to get comfortable in her new home.
Such a great girl! Thanks for thinking rescue.
When she's not in the crate she will lay on the floor near us or in this dog bed in the family room. She sometimes brings a rope toy into her bed with her. |
