More on Miss Hillary

Hillary has been here three weeks now and is doing great.  She's not had one accident in the time she's been here so I would say she's housebroken.  I work from home and have a basement in the office.  We haven't taken the time to teach Hillary how to use the staircase so she stays on the first floor while I'm in the basement working during the day.  She is good when she's "alone."  She likes the dog bed and does like to chew a bone or a rope toy and pretty much keeps herself busy.

We had company over this week for dinner and Hillary did great.  She's a little shy at first but warms up quickly.  She is a lover at heart and just needs a few moments to smell folks before greeting them. Once she was comfortable she hung out around the table with all of us.

She loves my two teenage girls and is good with all the chaos that goes along with that.  The singing loudly, the yelling (yes, it happens), the trombone and oboe practice, the rushing through the house, etc.  None of that activity bothers her.  She is good with my husband also.  At night, if we have time to watch some TV Hillary snuggles into her dog bed in the family room with us.  My daughter coaxed her up on the couch one night and Hillary rested with her head on my daughter's lap that evening.  She hasn't gone up on the couch without being invited though so that's good.

Hillary came to the rescue heartworm positive.  She received her treatment here in Illinois and is ready to go to a forever home.  In the years that my family has been fostering for Fluffy Dog we've helped about a dozen dogs through their heartworm treatment.  They have all done great.  The dogs receive two injections to kill the heartworms and then they need to keep their activity levels low for about a month as the heartworms dissolve in their systems.  Once that month of rest is over they just need to take a monthly hearworm preventative, like Heartgard Plus, each month.  That's just like any dog...they all need a monthly heartworm preventative.  It's such an easy thing and so inexpensive, it's sad that any dog becomes heartworm positive in the first place.

So, Hillary's been resting and has just a few days to go before she can officially run around in the back yard.  I would consider her a medium energy dog but still, after a month of resting I can tell she's ready to run and play.  She tries to play with my dog Holly but at 15 yrs old Holly just isn't into it.  Hillary does well in her crate with a bone but after a couple hours she does get restless.  So, recently we've let Hillary sleep in my daughter's bedroom at night instead of the crate and she's done great.  Hillary finds a warm spot on the rug next to the bed and sleeps quietly all night.  Very good girl.

She is a really great girl, a really great size (about 20 inches to the shoulder), and a super temperament.  Thanks for thinking about rescue!
